Nigel Lawson receiving the Wednesday cup from Roger Hopper
The newly introduced trophy for the Wednesday Handicap Racing of IOM yachts has been won by Nigel Lawson, with second place going to John Burgoine and third place to Martin Taylor.
The silver cup, which was donated to the club by Ian Green, was presented to Nigel by our Sailing Team Leader Roger Hopper.
The h/cap system is based on starting time intervals between three fleets, dependent upon the experience of competing skippers. The final scores of the series were evenly distributed which indicates successfully balanced racing.
The event is held monthly, and it is planned that there will be two six monthly series each year. Yellow, Green and Red h/caps fleets will be reset at the start of each series to reflect the experience levels of skippers. This takes in knowledge of racing rules and improvement in boat handling.
Our thanks go to Roger for running the sailing competitions, to John Burgoine for compiling the results and to Ian Green for providing the trophy.

The wind had very kindly blown all the floating algae down to the Bournville Lane end of the pool.
Alan and several volunteers spend several hours this morning clearing the algae so that racing could proceed.
At present the pool is now clear again and we continue to monitor the situation.

Sailing during the morning of Saturday 12th July was unfortunately impacted significantly by isolated clumps of subsurface weed along with an area of the pool being covered by mats of floating surface weed.
As the situation is unlikely to improve buy tomorrow Sunday 13th July our sailing team lead has made the decision in the interests of fair racing and meaningful results that tomorrows scheduled IOM Victory racing will be replaced by IOM Informal Racing.

A smart Blue Plaque has now been affixed to the exterior wall of the boathouse!
This looks terrific, adding a real touch of class and gravitas to the building and to our club.

Club Boathouse and Lake listed as Grade 2
On the 27th February 2025 Historic England granted grade 2 listed status to our boathouse and lake for the following reasons.
Architectural Interest:
The boathouse possesses special interest as an example of a rare type of recreational building and demonstrates a good level of craftsmanship in its design. These buildings are a carefully considered and cohesive scheme demonstrating the intrinsic link between the boathouse and lake.
Historic Interest
The Bournville boathouse and boating lake form an important part of Birmingham’s social history, both through the association with the Cadbury family and business, and as a relief scheme for the unemployed.
